Remembering Trevor
Dorothy Evelyn Fondren, 66, died suddenly in San Diego on June 13, 2007, following a massive stroke. Born in Jackson, MS, "Skinless" had charisma and energy that was contagious, spirited and mischievous. A grad of Murrah HS, she spent summers at Camp DeSoto in Mentone, AL, recently as a "Camp Take-Me-Away" alumna. At Mississippi State College for Women, "Skinless" was in the Rouge and Blacklist "social" clubs. She followed the RN program at St Dominic's with "adventurous" duty as a Navy Nurse in NYC, the Philippines, a hospital ship and California. San Francisco is where Lcdr Fondren left the Navy to make an impact upon the world. After a Master's Degree in Recreation and Leisure, in the late 1980s, she created a walking tour in San Francisco. Under the alias, Trevor Hailey, she blended a unique sense of history of the Castro District with humor and a raspy, southern voice, resulting in an entertaining and informative walking tour of this historical community. Trevor Hailey was an icon in San Francisco and is known worldwide on the Internet. She was twice recognized by a Resolution from the Mayor naming a day in her honor, Trevor Hailey Day. In death she gave life by donating her organs and tissue to more than 50 people. "Aunt Ebbo" is survived by her brother, David Fulton Fondren; sister, Martha Fondren Spisso; partner, Norma Sue Griffin; niece, Tawnya Fondren; nephews, David and Michael Spisso and their families. She was buried with full military honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego on June 28, 2007. Bless her heart. Donations in her memory may be made to the Camper Scholarship Fund, Camp DeSoto, P.O. Box 432, Mentone, AL 35984. |
