Rick Bacigalupi promoting 'A Lot in Common' on KPIX-TV's 'Bay Sunday'Principal at BACIPIX, Emmy Award–winning TV veteran Rick Bacigalupi started as an intern at KPIX–TV San Francisco in 1986. He has served as a unit manager for Westinghouse Broadcasting’s national magazine show "PM Magazine," an associate producer for KQED’s news show "This Week in Northern California" and a freelance co–producer for KQED’s Local Heroes campaign for over 10 years.

In 1996 he founded BACIPIX (because "Bacigalupi Words & Pictures" is just too long!) to further explore some of the great stories and causes being discovered through the Local Heroes project. Shortly thereafter he began work on "A Lot in Common" and "Only in the Castro," (link) which became the premiere efforts of the A Lot in Common Documentary Unit. Five additional independent documentaries are currently in production.

Rick serves on the Board of Governors for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northern California/Hawai’i Chapter. He is a member of NATAS, Media Alliance, Bay Area Video Coalition, and the International Documentary Association.

 

Justina Mattos

Raised in Hawai'i, Justina Mattos worked and studied theatre in San Francisco and Oregon before returning to Honolulu to earn her Ph.D. in Theatre Arts at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. She has been active in all aspects of community and educational theatre since 1976, primarily as an actress and director; and has been a member of the Screen Actors Guild since 1985. For twelve years she taught as a lecturer for the University of Oregon and Chaminade University, as well as for the University of Hawai'i system. She now spends her days as a Hawaiian Cultural Specialist in the museum world, while continuing to do theatre at night. In her free time she dabbles in screenwriting.

Roland Joseph Torres is an independent media professional with more than fifteen years experience covering multiple facets of broadcast television production, strategic marketing and multimedia. He is the founder and executive director of the Pacific Media & Learning Trust, Inc., a Hawai'i Non–Profit Corporation engaged in the production of broadcast television and web–based projects, as well as hands–on training coursework targeting Native Hawaiian and other Hawai'i Island populations historically under–represented in the multimedia marketplace.

Torres is the creator and producer of the popular series "Kama'aina Backroads,"™ the premiere travelogue offering viewers a "local" perspective on "Holoholo, Island Traditions, and Roads Less–Traveled." Broadcast throughout Hawai'i on Time Warner's OC–16, and throughout Nevada on COX–96, Kama'aina Backroads™ currently reaches a combined mix of more than 1 million households via television, and literally billions of people via complimentary, live telecasts on the web. Born and raised on O'ahu, his extended family has called Hawai'i Island home for 6 generations.

 

Jeannette Paulson Hereniko

Jeannette Paulson Hereniko has spent much of her career working with independent cinema of the Pacific. She is founder of the Hawai'i International Film Festival, which she directed 1980–1996. In 1990 Hereniko served as the first director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and she now directs the Asia Pacific Media Center of the University of Southern California. Hereniko serves on the international board of directors of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) and is president of NETPAC/USA.

 

Ka'ala Carmack

Ka'ala, a Native Hawaiian musician/singer/pianist/teacher who originally hails from Honolulu, has resided in San Francisco for 25 years. He has 2 Masters degrees: an M.M. in Vocal Pedagogy and Choral Conducting, and an M.A. in Ethnomusicology.

A long time music and voice instructor as well as music producer/director/conductor, he is also in continuous demand as a performer of Hawaiian music throughout the Bay Area. Besides being the leader of and performing with Piko Hawaiian Trio, he has also been one of the lead singers and guitarists for Patrick Makuakane's national touring company and Hula halau, Na Lei Hulu I ka Wekiu.

Rob has been designing Internet sites since 1993, from the ASCII–based "graphics" of Bulletin Board Systems to today’s web technology. He extended his computer design to law firms in the Bay Area. He became a member of the Bay Area Association of Litigation Support Managers, an organization that shares best practices and technology tips among legal support professionals. Between 1998 and 2000, Rob served as president of the association. He returned to university for two years, earning certificates in both Project Management and Computer Project Management from the University of California, Berkeley Extension in 2006.
